BİRLEŞMİŞ MİLLETLER (TURKİSH JOURNAL) – Pia Bozyel- United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that promises made with respect to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are in “peril”.
Guterres spoke at the High Level Political Forum On Sustainable Development, taking place at the UN building in New York until July 19th.
Reminding countries unanimous commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, Guterres said “ for the 2030 deadline, the world is woefully off-track.”
Referring to “The Sustainable Development Goals Progress Report Special Edition”, Guterres mentioned that the report paints a stark picture with progress on fully half of all SDG targets being “weak and insufficient”
“Hunger is back to 2005 levels”
Guterres, indicated that while emissions continue to rise and inequalities persist, “hunger is back to 2005 levels and gender equality is 300 years away.”
Warning that if the current course is pursued, almost 600 million people will be mired in extreme poverty by 2030, Guterres continued:
“Ambition, urgency and solidarity have been lacking. So has finance. Many countries are facing a financial abyss.The annual SDG funding gap has risen from $2.5 trillion before the pandemic to an estimated $4.2 trillion.Governments are drowning in debt – with developing countries facing sky-high borrowing costs. And 52 nations are in default or close to it – with no effective system of debt relief in sight.”
“World is crying out for high-level political action”
Guterres emphasized that the world is crying out for “high-level political action.”
Drawing attention to the importance of tackling climate change, Guterres underlined the importance of limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees.
